DIY No Sew Table Runner project by: Amy Cox

Our Inspiration Team searched HARD to find a cream colored table runner for our Thanksgiving table setting for this month's "Gather" theme. We couldn't find one anywhere! When we sat down to have our Craft Kit planning meeting, Amy said, "Hey...Let's just make our own!" So that's what we did! (And this is one of the many reasons why I LOVE my team) ;) This no sew table runner is such a quick and easy project and it really ties all the Gather elements in nicely. It also looks ADORABLE on my dining room table.

Creating your SparkleBerry Table Runner

Before we get started on our table runner, we need to decide how wide our no sew table runner needs to be. I did a little googling and it turns out Martha Stewart recommends a table runner's width should be 1/3 of the table width. So I'm trusting Martha on this one. ;)

Step 1: Start by deciding the width of your table runner. Make a fold in your fabric with half that amount and cut off the excess fabric. We folded ours in half to make one cut instead of two. (Amy's idea! She's so smart!)

Start on one side, turn over a small amount of fabric and start a hem by ironing the edge. Turn it over again to hide the raw edge and iron again. Once you've created a nice hem, place the Heat N Bond hem adhesive along the inside edges and iron one final time. Repeat this all the way around the edges.

Amy cut the corners to make it easier to fold over.

This is the Heat n Bond Hem Adhesive Amy used.

Applying HTV to your new Table Runner

Pre-heat your heat press to 305 °F while you cut. (EasyPress: 325 °F)

Cutting Patterned HTV

Cutting patterned HTV on your Cricut or Cameo is a little different than cutting solid HTV. You will apply your carrier sheet after you cut.

Patterned Pro Tips:

  • Cut "Pretty" side up
  • Do not mirror
  • Use the same setting you use for EasyWeed HTV.
  • Cameo Recommended Setting: Heat transfer, smooth | Cricut: Iron-on

Cut only the "Gather" portion of your cut file design. "Here with grateful hearts" will be cut from your solid Electric Copper.

Lay your Madras Plaid - Goldenrod pattern "pretty" side up on your mat. Do not mirror.

Once you've weeded your design, cut away the uncut HTV to use later. (It's too gorgeous to waste) ;)

Next, peel the backer off your Medium Tack Mask and place it sticky side up on a firm surface. Place your design onto the sticky side and squeegee the front and the back. Remove the backer from your patterned HTV and throw it away.

It's ready to press! But first, let's cut our solid design.

Cutting Solid HTV

  • Cut carrier sheet down. (The shiny side)
  • Mirror cut (because you're cutting from the back of the htv)
  • Cameo Recommended Setting: Heat transfer, smooth | Cricut: Iron-on

Place your solid Electric HTV carrier sheet down on your mat.

Cut "here with grateful hearts" from your solid Electric Copper. (Don't forget to mirror!) Weed your design and now it's ready to press onto your Table Runner!

Pressing HTV

The "Gather Here with Grateful Hearts" design can be placed on both ends of your table runner or in the center. Make sure to place your table runner on your table to calculate proper placement of your design. You have enough HTV to create two for each end and that's what we did!

You'll want to preheat your fabric to take the moisture out and to smooth any wrinkles from the fabric. Place "Gather" in the desired area on the runner and cover with a teflon sheet or parchment paper for extra protection. Press using the "quick-tack" method. Quick-tack is a 1-2 second press. Carefully peel your medium tack mask off the design and place back onto the paper backing. (It's reusable!)

Next, press your solid Electric Copper below "Gather." (Don't forget your teflon or parchment paper cover) Press for 12-15 seconds. Peel carrier sheet warm and throw away.

Optional Method:

If you are VERY careful, you are able to press both your patterned HTV and solid HTV at the same time on this design. Be sure to NOT layer the HTV on top of the carrier sheet of the other layer. You'll need to trim the carrier sheets so they do not overlap. Amy demonstrates this here:

TaDa! You've just created your very own Thanksgiving Table Runner!
